As it turns out, most of the usefulness from my original WRT54G hacking came from having an always-on LCD for output. Assuming I'm willing to ditch 1-wire, I can use the serial port to connect directly to a PIC Microcontroller that talks to an LCD. This allows for much faster updates to the LCD, possibly even scrolling.
However, I have other priorities this semester that prevent me from making progress on this project.
